What Happened to all the Resolutions?

I know, it seems I’m late to the game..but it’s not true! I’ve been thinking about and working towards my “resolutions” and goals already this year. But I have a question..

dodo-model-news-two-column.jpgDid anyone see resolutions made publicly this year? It’s almost as if resolutions are going the way of the dodo.

I mean, I know statistically we “give up” on the years goals before January is even over. Or we don’t want to make them because we don’t want to fail..but this is the thing. If you aren’t trying to better yourself, you’re getting worse.

I know it’s hard (and scary sometimes!) to make and set goals and keep them, it is for me. But I’m going to try anyhow!

Because resolutions don’t have to be life or death. Or if you don’t do it, you fail. Or if you miss one day, one time, one extra, then you didn’t do it right. No, that’s not the point of it.

~The definition of a resolution is the firm decision to do or not to do something.

~And the definition of resolve is to find a solution or to decide firmly on a course of action.

I like resolve better, instead of a set in stone, unmovable decision you can make a plan that remains flexible but with an equally great end goal.

So for me, resolutions are out and resolving to do things in my life, is in. Is it the same thing? Maybe. But I don’t mind a good plan of action.

I’m excited for 2018. A year better than the last and a year of moving forward. And I’m excited about the things I have chosen to resolve to do more, too.

This year, I resolve to:

First, I want to pray more. My faith has grown stronger with each passing day and I want more. I’ve been reading my daily prayer book with quick devotionals, I downloaded a Bible app that sends me short devotionals each day and I’m getting caught up with my Cindee devotionals, too, and it feels good.

stretch more.

I want to do more yoga, too, but my stretching is so essential! Working and sitting a lot is so terrible for you. I love to stretch during shows or during an at-home movie. It feels so good to stretch after a workout, too. I’m aiming for 3 times a week.

eat better, more.

I love to eat healthy, so I guess I’m blessed with that. But I also love snacks, drinks, wine, cheese, and coffee…all things I should cut back on more. I did have a coffee this morning, but no wine last night. Getting better already, LOL.

So, I recently tested for allergies and intolerances and it turns out, I’m highly sensitive to caffeine. I like tea and have drank coffee for years and like dark chocolate more then milk chocolate, too (dark has more caffeine.) Anyhow, I got this result less than a month ago and I remember feeling sad!

The first reason, I love coffee! And as a writer I feel it a right of passage, to brew and consume my morning cup. Plus, anyone who has had a caffeine headache (me,) never wants one again. But it turns out, I don’t miss it too much.  I had a tea a couple of days, a coffee a couple of days, and have had nothing some days. Yay! And knowing I shouldn’t have it motivates me not to, so it’s working out already.

Nick really loves to read and while I do, too, it isn’t something I want to do for hours everyday. But the thing is, he does. I want to indulge him more in reading this year. I can read more and he loves to read together (but separate,) so I want to do that more with him.

So there you have it. There are lots of other things I want to do this year, more butt workouts, being one of them. (Did one today, yay!) And to be the best wife and friend that I can be, of course.

The thing is, there is plenty of time in the day, you just have to do it right. You just have to make it happen and fit in things when you can. And remember, small changes along the way make such a difference=) So, with that being said, go out and do it!

Tolerance Test Results: In- And Here’s What They Said

First things first, Happy New Year!! I got these results over Christmas, it was like an early present=)

I was so excited that my results came in and I couldn’t wait to pour over the findings.

Allergy Test Findings:

I’m intolerant to..

  • pumpkin (can you believe it? I never liked it much anyhow but some people woulddownload (2) be the saddest.)
  • coriander, aka cilantro. Funny enough, I don’t like this either..
  • buckwheat and oat flour
  • and Brazil nuts.

I was also intolerant to several non-food items, and will do research to see what they are and how to avoid them.

(Chaetomium Globosum, Chicken Serum Proteins, Horse Fly Bot, Insulin Porcine, Swine Serum Albumin, Ustilago Tritici)

I’m deficient in..

What?!? I take a fish oil everyday (everyday I “remember.”) So, I need to be more vigilant about taking fish oil each day, and even double down.

I have an elevated level of..

Mercury. I attribute this to eating canned tuna. I really do like canned tuna.

According to my low cortisol levels..

I’m a relaxed individual. Hahahaha, ok. l’ll take it.download (4).jpg

I also received DNA related risk levels for things like blood pressure, fat intake, sodium intake, and cholesterol and triglyceride levels. These results tell me what effects me and what I can and shouldn’t do to feel the best.

And, what we’ve all been waiting for, my sensitivities.

Side note: these findings all align with my psoriasis diagnosis. This makes these results very reliable in my eyes and I’m glad to have almost had a second opinion, of sorts.

According to my results..

I have an intolerance for gluten. I’ve noticed not eating gluten makes me feel better, not obnoxiously full after meals, and less tummy bloat, too. images

I have a slight sensitivity to lactose. This means my body produces less of the enzyme that processes lactose. As a Wisconsinite, I grew up eating cheese and everything dairy. As an adult, I still love cheese but don’t drink milk or have copious amounts of dairy, otherwise. So cutting back is easy enough for me.

Another surprise was reading that I am highly sensitive to caffeine. I plan to wean and cut caffeine entirely, at least to test out how it makes me feel.images (3)

Because at the end of the day, I just want to feel well. I want to feel alert without caffeinating, satiated without feeling “full,” and healthy because of food, natural remedies through essential oils and with plant-based and low/no chemical cleaners to help life sparkle.

I’m glad I looked into testing like this, and that I went through with it. Wellness is about all the small decisions, everyday, that we make. If you make lots of good but little decisions, it will pay off and you will feel more well each day.

If you make bad decisions and listen to your senses and ignore what your body wants and needs, you will feel less and less well each day. It’s just the way it is.

White Wine Lemon Pepper Fish

I love a good white fish. And along with being healthful, it’s so quick and easy to cook up!

Lemon and garlic keep this fish light but flavorful. Then the white wine adds a richness you weren’t expecting. You’ll want to cook this dish once a week!

White Wine Lemon Pepper Fishfish

  • 1 tablespoon butter (or oil)
  • 3 small white fish fillets
  • 1 tablespoon lemon pepper seasoning
  • 2 tablespoons white wine
  • salt to taste

Spoon butter into a medium-sized skillet pan on medium heat. Dry the fillets with paper towels and sprinkle with the lemon pepper seasoning and salt.

Cook fillets about 3 minutes on each side, flipping only once. Serve immediately along side a fresh salad.

Five Wellness Must Haves for Traveling

Christmas is coming, Christmas is coming! Us? We’re going..back home that is=) Are you traveling for this Christmas season? What does travel look like for you?

Nick and I fly a good amount, and take road trips when applicable. And, if you know me, you know I plan for the wellness of it all.

We’re going back to Wisconsin for Christmas, and I can hardly wait. I love the change of the seasons and we haven’t been home for Christmas since we’ve been living in Florida.

We will be flying, so the requisite suitcase will come along, filled with sweaters, jeans, leggings, and all the fuzzy socks. And what’s more? Wellness items, of course.

Five Wellness Must Haves for Traveling

Oils

I know, you’re shocked. But seriously, I always have oils with me. Right now, I’m working from a local library and I have oils in my purse. Over the weekend, I went to a wine tasting and yup, you guessed it, oils in my purse. Take them with you! No Sick is awesome for keeping well and I use Frankincense right around my ears to prevent plane popping. I love oils.

Snacks

Not only are airport snacks way more expensive than they should be, there aren’t that many great selections. Yes, I see more and more healthy options coming out all the time. But if you want to ensure to have great snacks you love and know are good for you, bring them yourself!

Water bottle


Keeping hydrated is about the best thing you can do for yourself on any given day. Plain water is best (and so refreshing!) so keeping a BPA-Free water bottle with you at all times is a must.

Blanket


Trust me when I say, oils aren’t the only thing that go everywhere with me. And I feel a bit like a child sometimes, but I love my blankie. Aww. How cute. The thing is, my dad got it for me at some point in college and I cannot let it go!

I’m talking, sleep with it every night, goes on every trip and even comes to any movie theater showing with us, that’s how much I love it. And in the airport and on planes, it’s awesome.

Probiotics


So this is the thing, whether you’re eating differently than at home or if you’re out and about with other people,  you need to take care of your gut. And probiotics do that. Do you eat (low-sugar) yogurt on the regular? What about fermented foods like pickles or Kombucha?

If not, consider a probiotic supplement. You’re tummy will thank you for it and the “happier” (read: HEALTHIER) you keep your tummy, the better you will feel.

Best Essential Oils for Feeling Well

Or are you used to getting a nasty cold or dealing with some other sickness most holiday seasons? What if I told you there was something you could do about it? What if I told you, you didn’t have to get sick?

I’m not a flu shot fan and I don’t get the flu shot. But you know what else I don’t get? Sick. At least not anymore.

Early on, Nick and I realized that we didn’t get each other sick. Bonus. But back then, we did get sick. Colds, the flu, things like heartburn and indigestion, and winter sicknesses, too.

Through the years, we’ve chosen to work towards being more health forward. We care more about what we eat and we are vigilant about exercise. But the biggest change? Essential Oils.

They have changed my wellness and preventative wellness life, so much so, that Nick and I really haven’t gotten sick in almost three years. Three years!

No Sick is my favorite blend, with Thieves and Oregano, and coincidentally, it smells like Christmas to me.  I swipe it several times a week, whenever I think about it. If I’m feeling off, like I may be getting “sick,” I swipe several times a day, for a few days.

Lemon Oil

Lemon essential oil is amazing for your immune system. (And it smells heavenly!) As long as your using food-grade oil, you can consume it internally, too. So add it to your protein shake, tea or hot or cold water for a great and healthy boost.

Tea Tree Oiltea tree

Tea tree oil has a fresh, light scent and it protects against viruses, bacteria and microbes.

This oil is great in the diffuser or just a drop, rubbed into your skin.

Putting a Tolerance Test, to the Test

A girl I follow on Instagram was talking about this allergy and intolerance test that she took, and it got me thinking. I realized I really wanted to do it and I started to put in some research.

She did the famed Pinnertest and with just a finger prick of blood, found out what her body tolerated, and what it didn’t. Turns out there are lots of tests out there that do this, and I wanted to get my hands on one, too.

Who wouldn’t want to know what their body does and doesn’t react to. At the very least, you’d be able to make an informed decision about what you’re eating and consuming, and how its affecting you. Never forget, knowledge is power.

When I googled allergy tests, Groupon came up and I was interested right away. If you’ve been following me for a while, you know how I feel about a great Groupon deal.

The test is called Identallergy. There are two tests, one tests for 750+ different food and environmental intolerances and the other tests for those,  plus gives you a Genetic Nutrition test. The first cost $39 and the second, $59. We opted for the total test.

I love that it tests for so many different factors that could be affecting your health. I’m all about preventative wellness, and this is such a great way to keep moving forward in health.

Here’s what happened:

  • First, I found it on Groupon and bought it. Right on the voucher, there’s a link to go and “register.” Super easy and took only minutes.
  • Next, the packet and information was sent right to my door. There were instructions, steps, tips, two long cotton swabs, and two specimen envelopes along with one larger preadressed envelope.
  • The test was easy to do and out the door in no time. First, right away in the morning, I swabbed my cheeks, one cheek per cotton swab, for the allotted 10-15 seconds and I put them carefully into the envelope.
  • For the next part, I needed help. You have to send in some of your hair and it needs to be IMG_20171126_072615enough hair that it looks about the diameter of a pencil eraser. I thought that this would leave a bald spot (especially for my husband’s short hair) and I didn’t like the idea of cutting any of mine, but, no fear, it worked out great.

(I took hair from an inconspicuous place and you can’t even see where we cut Nick’s (and we even did his in two separate places just to be sure we had enough!)

  • So I sent them out, and that’s that. We are supposed to have results in our email inbox in 14-21 days and I really can’t wait to see what they say!

I’m really hoping my results relate to how I’ve cared for myself over the years, but if not and I need to do something different, now’s as good a time as any to start!

Use No Sick to Help Your Family Stay Not Sick!

No Sick you say, what’s that? Well, it’s an essential oil blend, and one of my favorites.

Want to stay healthy? No Sick. Feeling off and don’t want to get more sick? No Sick. Feeling fine and want to stay that way? No Sick.

No Sick Blend

  • 25 drops Thieves oil
  • one ounce of carrier oil

To use, remove the cap and swipe on your skin. A good place is the side of your foot or on your wrist where your skin is thinner.

That’s it. And it smells like Christmas, and I love that.

Having blends (or single oils) in roller bottles are great because you can carry them around easily and one swipe is all you need. For preventative wellness, use it daily. If you’re feeling sick, use it every three hours or so until you’re feeling better.

Self-Care for Positivity

As an immensely emotional girl, there are times when I’m on the verge of tears, all day. Not everyday, but some days. Whether it’s timing related, situational, or something else, we all have those days sometimes.

So what do you do? How do you get out of it? How do you overcome? I’ll tell you.

Self-care, and often. Take care of your head, and your heart, first. Whether you feel bad, good, or indifferent in the morning, do what you can to feel your best, it can only help.

Here’s how:

Consider Taking St. Johns Wort

St. Johns Wort is known for helping regulate and elevate mood. The bottle I have lists the dosage as three times daily with food. When I take it, I take two, once a day, and not usually with food. (Doesn’t irritate an empty stomach.) PLEASE make sure to check this against anything else you’re taking.

Call it placebo effect, or say it works, either way, I feel better.

Use Essential Oilsroller-balls

Oils have truly changed my life. I have replaced several OTC products, and use them around the house for other things every day. And self-care is no different.

For everyone, lavender is great. Whether you diffuse it, dab it on your wrist for the scent, or it’s part of a blend, this oil is calming, and will truly relax you.

As a woman, (with debilitating monthly cramps, PMS, and more,) Progressence Plus has literally changed these issues for the better. I take it everyday for two weeks in between cycles, and the week before, I take it only about every other day. I stop the week of, and will start taking it again as my time wears towards the end. This oil calms cramps, shortens my cycle, and helps two fold with the emotional aspect. I can’t speak better about it, but again, please do what works best for you and make sure to check any drug interactions

For guys who need a (natural) testosterone boost, Idaho Blue Spruce is the oil to use. I also formulated another testosterone mixture that is good for influencing fertility, raising testosterone levels, and overall men’s wellness. The Idaho Blue Spruce and the mixture were both enough to raise testosterone levels from too low to in range, according to a blood test. So they truly work and are a natural way to influence and help the body raise these levels on its own.

Workout

Walk, stretch, do yoga, or visit the gym, whatever it is, do something! Staying active and moving everyday allows your body to create feel good hormones that can positively influence your mood, and therefore, your whole day.

Sometimes when you “feel bad” it makes you want to “eat bad.” Don’t give in! Your body needs the minerals and vitamins from whole, nutritious foods to fuel your life. Eating fruits, vegetables, and homemade meals will make you feel the best you can. It will help you prepare mentally, with a clear head, and a belly full of nutrition.

Go Outside

Whether it’s cold, hot, or pouring down rain, do what you can to get outside. If you only have 5 minutes for a quick walk around the block, do it. Breathe deep, clear your mind, look at the foliage. This will calm you and reinvigorate your system, more than you may know. Want to go a step further? Smell a flower and touch it’s leaves. Use your senses to get back to what really matters, experiencing life, if only for a moment.

Life can be exhausting, and hard but you can push through it! And if not, fake it til you make it because the best is yet to come. Happy weekend all!

9 Reasons I Love Essential Oils And Why They Have Replaced My “Medicine” Cabinet

Everyone knows that plants hold the essence of life, filled with all the vitamins, minerals and healthful properties, making them one of the most important facets of your daily diet. Now, imagine you can take all the goodness from the very leaves, flowers and innards of said plants and have only that wonderful concentration, at your fingertips, for use at will.

No need to imagine, because you can. And they’re called essential oils.

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years and were first recorded around 5000 years ago. This form of ancient healing and medicine is so old that it’s even mentioned in the bible. There are so many reasons to love and use oils, they’re great.

 

1. They’re naturalnono

Reducing chemicals and toxins in this life is a top priority of mine. From phytoestrogens to GMO’s, everyday life introduces and contains more man made substances than ever before. Find and use more natural sources of nutrition and wellness wherever possible.

2. They’ve been used for thousands of years

This day in age, if something doesn’t work or react the the way you want it to- you replace it. To me, it’s saying something that these oils have been around forever and are still being used. Not only that, they’re more popular than ever.

As a former daily allergy pill user, I have not used OTC allergy medicine of any kind since starting with essential oils. Also, instead of lotions or moisturizers, I now use an oil (and carrier oil) blend for my face and body needs. Beyond this, I diffuse oils daily for the amazingly fresh (non-toxic) scent and the benefits associated with inhaling the blends.

4. They prevent sickness

Preventative health includes eating well, exercising and “feeding” your body far before you get sick. Taking healthful oils and staying well is the most important. This will ensure you become healthier sooner post sickness and help keep you from getting sick in the first place.

Thieves and oregano oil mixed 50/50 is my favorite preventative oil blend, dubbed “No Sick” for its healthful effect. (And I ALWAYS have this blend with me when I’m traveling.)

Essential oils have all the best properties including antibacterial, antifungal, anti-infectious, antimicrobial, and antiviral. To me, there is nothing better than experiencing all of these healthful benefits from something completely natural “medicine.”

Lemon essential oil is a great essential oil for boosting immunity. (Frankincense, oregano, thieves, and peppermint oil too.) Often used in the diffuser, lemon smells great and can also be directly applied to the skin. Tip: If you plan to be in the sun, make sure to apply lemon at night. Lemon can cause photosensitivity and therefore shouldn’t be worn in the sun.
