Crock Pot Stewed Apples and Raisins

If you read my Fall posts last year, you know I am not a pumpkin fan. I don’t want Pumpkin Spice Lattes, I don’t want pumpkin seeds, and I don’t want pumpkin cake. What do I want?

Apples, I want all the apples. Apple cider, dehydrated apples, raw and fresh apples, apple everything! And these stewed apples take next to no time at all, smell up your whole house with real apple flavor, and taste super indulgent all while being super healthy. Here’s the recipe:

Crock Pot Stewed ApplesIMG_20180828_184843

  • 6 medium apples, cored and cut into thick slices (I got about 6 pieces per apple)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

In a crock pot, add the apples and lemon juice and combine. Then on top of that add the raisins. Sprinkle the cinnamon over the top and drizzle with honey. That’s it! Turn the crock pot on high and cook for about 1 1/2 hours. It’s done when you can poke a fork through them, but before they are mushy.

Seriously, this recipe couldn’t be easier or quicker, and the taste will fool anyone into thinking you put serious time and effort into this dish. Enjoy the apples of the season and Happy (almost) Fall!

Healthy Traveler’s Tips: Tip One

Take advantage of healthy options offered around you (sometimes they’re even free!) If you’re staying at a hotel, look for healthy snacks and drinks that are provided.

Fresh Fruit

Bananas and apples are often complementary during a hotel stay. Usually these are found in the hotel lobby or gym. It’s (literally) easy to grab and will last a few days sans refrigeration, making it a perfect on the go pick.

20161023_110315Bananas and apples are great “pre-workout” foods too. Grab a piece of fruit, lace up your shoes, and head outside to explore.

4 Reasons To Eat An Apple/Banana Each Day:

  • Both fruits are very nutrient dense foods with lots of vitamins and minerals. They will fill you up with good for your body carbs.
  • These fruits make great snacks. Their goodness provides the vitamins and minerals that help your body run at its best.
  • Did you know these fruit give a caffeine-free energy boost? Because of their easy to digest carbs, apples and bananas fuel your body almost as fast as you consume them.
  • Eating naturally high fiber foods is the best way to keep fiber in your diet. The fiber improves your gastrointestinal health too.

Drinks

Hot water for tea, coffee, and water are sometimes complementary as well. The coffee, tea and hot water are located in or near the lobby. And for chilled water, most hotel gyms have a water cooler or at least a bubbler. (For non-Wisconsinites, a water fountain LOL.)275px-A_small_cup_of_coffee

Some hotels have fruit water too. If not, limes, lemons, grapefruits, and oranges travel well, so if you like flavored water, keep some around so that you can have fruit water whenever you want.

Cinnamon Applesauce

Growing up, we had an apple tree and a pear tree. We also had a vegetable garden that I could only ever dream of (so far:) My mom made almost everything from scratch and her pear sauce is the best. Sweet and lightly spiced, it’s always one of my favorites.

I love a homemade applesauce too and this recipe couldn’t be more delicious or easy. Just chop the apples, add the ingredients, and it practically makes itself! Warm or cold, try this applesauce for a delicious treat.

Cinnamon ApplesauceIMG_20170406_150128 (1)

  • 6 organic red delicious apples, cored and chopped
  • 3 tablespoons honey (or vegan preference)
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon allspice

Add the ingredients to a medium sized sauce pan on medium heat. Cook for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. For a smoother texture, blend the mixture. Serve warm or cold and enjoy!

Tip: I blend 1/2 the mixture and add it to the rest for a chunkier applesauce=)

Fall Is Full Of Flavor, Fashion and Fun

As an October baby and WI native who loves to hike, Fall weather is the best weather. Popular seasonal foods and sports return to start this season. Fall has great weather, fashion and more to boast about.

Top Fall Flavors

Pumpkin is undoubtedly the preferred flavor of the Fall. Once Labor Day passes, pumpkins are everywhere. Pumpkin spice coffee, ice cream and candles rapidly became the go to way to celebrate the coming of the season.

Apples are also in season and ready for picking come Fall. Homemade applesauce and apple crumble reminds me of childhood. If a crisp fall air blew through the house with the scent of apple,  you just knew it was Fall.

Fall Fashion

Because of the weather change in most northern states due to fall, the clothing and styles change along with it.

sweatshirtThe cooler temps lead to layered looks and heavier choices like sweaters. Other fashion trends for the 2016 season range from wider embellished purse straps to pinstripe suits. Chokers have come back into style as well.

My personal favorite trend for Fall 2016 is hoodies! Elle.com says that “luxury comfort” is in making hoodies the ultimate indulgence. Yay 2016!

Fall Fun

Halloween, football season and outside activities are just a few of the fun things the Fall season offers. Temperate weather pushes people outside to indulge in its beauty before the winter season commences.

Halloween falls on October 31st and is the epitome of a fun holiday. Costumes and candy are the theme of the day and there is always a party to attend.

footballFootball fans ecstatically welcome back the season with 2/3 of all Americans tuning in to the NFL.  64%  of people watch their team every week for the duration of the football season.

The Fall weather is perfect for hiking and taking in all the sights of the season. Reds, oranges and yellows fill tree tops with a unique and breathtaking array of colors, making your view extraordinary.

Flavors, fashion and fun activities are the best things about Fall. This awesome season is often cut short with the cold and frost of Winter, so enjoy Fall while it lasts.
