Everything That’s Great About an Afternoon Tea

Is an afternoon tea the stuff of old movies and royalty? Or has it been perfected just for our fast-paced, caffeine-loving generation?

I love the extra pep a cup of tea gives you and all the vari-teas. (Haha, clever huh?) And drinking tea is super healthful, too.

Reasons to Drink More Tea

  • Tea is full of antioxidants, and keeps you young, from the inside out. Antioxidants also help protect against pollutants.
  • Tea is a hydrating drink. Did you know that? The common thought that tea dehydrates you has been debunked.
  • Tea is naturally calorie-free. Not only is it full of great stuff for you, it’s not full of empty calories. Win-win!
  • Herbal tea is naturally caffeine-free. Especially at night time, this tea provides the antioxidants you love, sans caffeine.
  • Other teas contain caffeine. But in comparison to coffees 95mg of caffeine per cup, tea has only 26 mg.

Tea Tips:

  • Teas, coffee, and spices are all of the heaviest fertilized products. The healthiest tea is organic tea.
  • Steep according to directions to avoid a bitter taste.
  • If you drink tea with caffeine, limit your consumption to five (1-cup) servings a day. However, with caffeine-free tea, you can feel free to indulge in six to eight cups a day.
  • And of course, here’s one of my favorite tea recipes, it a reci-tea!

Black Spiced Tea

  • 1 black tea bag
  • 6-8 ounces hot water
  • a large pinch of cinnamon powder
  • a large pinch of cayenne pepper
  • 1 tablespoons honey (or Vegan preference)
  • a squeeze of fresh lemon/lime

To a mug, add water and steep the tea bag according to package directions. Honey is heat sensitive, so let your tea cool a bit before you add it. Then finish with the lemon, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper.

This recipe is from my first book, Everything’s Better with Cayenne Pepper. Check out my other books, too, and watch for more to come!

Healthy Traveler’s Tips: Tip One

Take advantage of healthy options offered around you (sometimes they’re even free!) If you’re staying at a hotel, look for healthy snacks and drinks that are provided.

Fresh Fruit

Bananas and apples are often complementary during a hotel stay. Usually these are found in the hotel lobby or gym. It’s (literally) easy to grab and will last a few days sans refrigeration, making it a perfect on the go pick.

20161023_110315Bananas and apples are great “pre-workout” foods too. Grab a piece of fruit, lace up your shoes, and head outside to explore.

4 Reasons To Eat An Apple/Banana Each Day:

  • Both fruits are very nutrient dense foods with lots of vitamins and minerals. They will fill you up with good for your body carbs.
  • These fruits make great snacks. Their goodness provides the vitamins and minerals that help your body run at its best.
  • Did you know these fruit give a caffeine-free energy boost? Because of their easy to digest carbs, apples and bananas fuel your body almost as fast as you consume them.
  • Eating naturally high fiber foods is the best way to keep fiber in your diet. The fiber improves your gastrointestinal health too.

Drinks

Hot water for tea, coffee, and water are sometimes complementary as well. The coffee, tea and hot water are located in or near the lobby. And for chilled water, most hotel gyms have a water cooler or at least a bubbler. (For non-Wisconsinites, a water fountain LOL.)275px-A_small_cup_of_coffee

Some hotels have fruit water too. If not, limes, lemons, grapefruits, and oranges travel well, so if you like flavored water, keep some around so that you can have fruit water whenever you want.

Honey Lemon Green Tea

No matter your job, where you work, or how active you are, at some point during the day you think to yourself, “I’m a little tired,” or you simply hit a slump.

Then what? I like to have a quick walk or get up and do something else for a bit. Hopefully you choose a healthy and natural way to perk up and don’t automatically grab that energy drink or soda.

lemonsBut for a little bit of a kick, go healthful and natural and try green tea! Not only does this drink increase your metabolism but with the added honey and lemon, it boosts your immune system too.

For one cup, steep a green tea bag and (when warm and NOT hot) add a teaspoon of honey and a squeeze of lemon. A dash of cinnamon is yummy too.

Or you can make a huge batch and keep it in the fridge for an easy to grab and healthy afternoon pick-me-up.

Honey Lemon Green TeaIMG_20170425_140115

  • 16 cups of water
  • 16 organic green tea bags
  • 3 lemons, juiced
  • 1/4 cup raw unfiltered honey (or vegan preference)

Heat the water to boiling. Remove from the stove top and steep the tea bags for about 5 minutes. Let cool (to warm) for about half an hour and add the lemon and honey.

Tip: Honey has antibacterial properties and is very healthful for you. Heat damages honey so to reap these benefits, be sure to add honey to warm drinks dishes and not hot.

My 5 Favorite Natural Ways To Get Un-Sick and Quick!

‘Tis the season and whether you live in Northern WI or Southern FL, sickness always seems to accompany the holidays. Everyone has a passed down remedy for a sore throat or a cure all food to ward off a cold. These are usually things from your childhood that lapse into adulthood until they can be given to the next generation. Along with these come your own practices to get well.

When I woke up yesterday feeling under the weather, I found myself doing what I always do and I wanted to share those things with you:

Tea

Black tea or green tea with a pinch of cinnamon, cayenne pepper, some honey and fresh lemon. Speaking of lemon..

Lemon. And more lemon. On everything. In everything. Lemons have antibacterial and antifungal properties making fresh lemon juice the stuff of health.

Essential Oil Bath

I love a bath anyhow but there is nothing like slipping your sore and achy sick body into the warmth and stillness of a bath. There are typically three things I add to a bath:

Apple Cider Vinegar- Good for your skin health including balancing the pH and killing the fungus and bacteria on your skin

Epsom salt- Also good for your skin and helps soothe sore muscles (great for the fitness lover in me=)

Essential Oils- I love Young Living Essential oils for everything in life, especially the bath.

Tea Tree Oil contains antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiseptic and antiviral properties and is gentle on your skin. I added Lavender and Stress Away (my favorite blend!) as well.

Tip: Add the oil drops to your salt before adding to the bath water, this ensures the oils won’t bother your skin. (I’ve never had a problem adding the oils on top of the water but you can never be sure)

Water

We all know that drinking water is as important to life as breathing. 55-60% of an adults body is made up of water. When you’re sick, staying hydrated will make you feel better and keep things moving as well.

No Sick  Soup

You didn’t think you’d get through this without a recipe, did you? Haha. This is my “No Sick Soup.”  Made with fresh vegetables, fresh garlic and chicken broth, this soup is calming and filled with goodness.

No Sick Soupimg_20161110_154516

  • 1 baking potato, washed and sliced
  • 1/2 red onion, chopped
  • 1 carrot, sliced
  • 1 stalk of celery, diced
  • 5 cloves of garlic, sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups of chicken stock

Add everything in a medium sized saucepan over medium heat and simmer for about 30 minutes or until you can easily insert a fork into each type of vegetable. Scoop into bowls and add fresh pepper and a pinch of salt. Enjoy and feel better!

Feeling sick is a pain and will slow you down for sure. Make sure to rest when you need it and fuel up on nutritious and healthy foods and drinks so that you can feel better fast!
