From Kim K To No Way: This is How I Keep My Psoriasis Away

#psoriasissucks And I’m not the only one who feels this way. In fact, I don’t know anyone with psoriasis who doesn’t feel like this.

And it doesn’t matter if you’re Kim Kardashian, making all the money in the world, or me, making substantially less, it still sucks. And until you can get a hold of it, it will be your worst enemy, the thing you hate most about your body, and the thing you feel is holding you back.

This post is for you if you want all the secrets, all the ideas, and all the inspiration to get rid of your psoriasis, naturally. It has all my tips and tricks. My skin is currently 100% clear of psoriasis and has been since December 2018.

I was diagnosed with psoriasis in the summer of 2016. At that time, I was eating whatever I wanted, dealing with a very stressful season of life, (and work for that matter,) and I had tried every natural thing I could think of and find that may help with my psoriasis. The thing was, nothing was working. So, I went to my dermatologist, took her advice, and started using the steroid cream that she prescribed me. Not only did I HATE using the prescription, it didn’t work either. I went back and we discussed the shots.

I wanted to get rid of my psoriasis and that was that. But I knew I needed to do something different. I didn’t want my only relief from this disease to be $100+ shots several times a month and constant psoriasis patches, inflammation, and discomfort. I went in for the shots less than 10 times in total, mostly for my elbows and legs, the spots that had the worst plaques.

I needed change. So I googled everything I could about how to change my lifestyle, from the inside out. In the winter of 2017, I took an allergy test. Among other things, the test told me that I had a sensitivity to gluten.

Gluten causes inflammation and psoriasis and inflammation have a direct link. So as of Christmas 2017, when I got the results of my test, I’ve been gluten-free. I have not turned back. And a short 15 months later, I am completely psoriasis-free. I have no plaques on my legs, elbows, or face. (Yes, I had it on my face, too. Worst ever.) Also, my scalp psoriasis, the only spot on my body I did not treat with anything, has completely cleared.

So here you go. These are all the things I have done, will continue to do, and how I have found relief from this disease. I only hope these things help you as much as they did me!

What do I eat? Well, to be completely honest, I am a healthy food lover, and proud of it. My diet is filled with fruits and vegetables. I eat meat. I eat a lot of sweet potatoes. I cut them all up, coat them in avocado oil, salt, and pepper and bake them in the oven. I also like rice. A new favorite is white potatoes covered in oil, garlic, salt, and pepper, and very rarely, gluten-free pasta, because it’s my favorite.

As a Wisconsin girl, I was raised consuming all the dairy including milk, cheese, cottage cheese, full-fat cream, and the list goes on. That allergy test I took also said I was sensitive to dairy and while I have not fully cut it out, I have cut back more than I ever thought I would. Why? Dairy is inflammatory, too. And inflammation and psoriasis are the perfect match, for more psoriasis. So this is what I do. I only have cheese/dairy a few times a week, and when I do have cheese in a meal, that is the only meal with cheese in it for that day.

(Limited) Sun Exposuresunset-1625073__340

Long story short, my whole life (and health routine,) revolves around my skin. Good skin,  like really great skin, comes from the inside, out. It doesn’t matter what you are putting on your skin, or how you are taking care of your skin from the outside, if you aren’t eating right and drinking water, and resting, your skin will not shine, it will not be healthy, and you will see your psoriasis not only not getting better, but getting worse.

Sorry, tangent, back to the sun. According to my dermatologist, a short amount of sun is great for psoriasis. Getting burned and extended exposure is detrimental to psoriasis, so this is the rule I follow. When I’m in the sun, it’s 20 minutes of unprotected sun for my skin. Then, it’s a safe, natural, sunscreen, every hour, until I am out of the sun. And for a reference, I’m in direct sun less than three hours a day on the regular.

Psoriasis Soap

The only non-natural product I use is CeraVe soap. I use the bar soap all over my body, including my face. Otherwise, all the products I use are natural. This means no fragrances, no parabens or sulfates, and organic and locally sourced items whenever possible. Now that I am psoriasis free, I am fairly confident I could switch to a natural soap, and be fine. But in this case, old (and psoriasis clearing) habits die hard. So for me, it’s still CeraVe.

Wateraqua-3445987__340

Drink all the water. This applies to everyone, across the board. There is nothing better for your skin than water. Water keeps you hydrated, keeps inflammation down (and swelling, something else I deal with,) and just makes me feel better all around. If you have read my stuff before, you have heard me say a million times to drink all the water. And I will never stop saying it. Drink the water, all the water. It will not solely rid you of psoriasis, but I guarantee, it will help.

Lotion and Oils

So let’s talk about essential oils. I love them and I will always share my love of them, uses of them, and my favorite diffuser blends. Essential oils have been around forever and are even in the bible, that’s how old they are. For me, it’s a no brainer. These natural and healthful oils work great for preventative health, natural aroma therapy, and so much more. I use sweet almond oil and Frankincense on my face, and have for several years now. I first started trying different oils on my face when I was dealing with hormonal acne. That has since passed but this face moisturizing method has stayed with me.

For lotion, it needs to be the good stuff. I use it all over my body, besides my face and upper chest (which also gets the sweet Almond oil and Frankincense,) at least 3-4 times a week and directly after a shower. The stuff I use is from Amazon and it’s called Vanicream. I have used this for several years too and it’s great. It’s non-greasy and exceptionally moisturizing. It’s free of dyes, fragrances, masking fragrances, lanolin, parabens, formaldehye, and formaldehye releasers. It’s dermatologist tested, non-comedogenic, sulfate, phosphate, and gluten-free. It’s good stuff.

Alright, that’s all of it. This is my key to psoriasis-free skin. I’m not naive enough to think it will never come back and in fact, I do ‘flare’ every once in a while. This post will help you navigate those flares.

Good luck with your psoriasis! Don’t forget these tips and give me any you have found, too. Knowledge is power! XOXO

If my Gram were still here and she loved an oil blend, this would be it.

She is the inspiration behind this blend and I’ve blogged about her original recipe before. See it HERE.

You’ll Love This Ginger Snap Cookie Diffuser Blend

Ginger Snap Cookies always remind me of Christmas. My mom and step dad bake up dozens of homemade cookies over the holidays and they always do these, too. (And even made them gluten-free for me this year=)

I added these oils to a spray bottle and the first spray was instant memories of Ginger Snap Cookies. I love this blend and you will, too! Here’s the recipe.

Ginger Snap Cookie

  • 10 drops Thieves
  • 10 drops Lemon

In a spray bottle, add the oils to 2 tablespoons of salt and then about a cup of water and shake. For a diffuser blend, add the oils and water to a diffuser.

What are you diffusing this season? Whatever it is, keep it up! Thieves is great for your immune system (over the holidays especially) but all year long and lemon is, too!

Kara’s Favorite Oil Blend

“Do you have any oils that you would like in the diffuser right now?”- Kara, our AirBnb hostess asked me.

“Hmm. Whatever’s your favorite!” -Me

Essential oil lover to essential oil lover, I love to know what other peoples favorites are! When we stayed in Charleston, our Airbnb hostess (and host) were awesome! Monday morning Kara and I were sitting together and working and she started up the diffuser and let me pick the scent. But I wanted to know what her favorite blend was, and this was it!

The Oils That Save My Skin After A Sunburn

It’s almost late September and it (sometimes) feels like Fall, I’m in Wisconsin for a few more weeks, and I accidentally got sunburnt just 3 days ago. Ugh. This is what I did.

I used oils. Yup, my trusty essential oils. And the burn, and my lobster red skin, were 90% recovered by morning. No joke. This is what happened.

I was with some of my favorite friends since high school and we all went to a Brewers game. It. Was. HOT. I’m talking sun without clouds, almost 90 degrees, and the littlest of breezes you ever did feel. I use sunscreen religiously so I did apply!

I slathered on sunscreen..that is on my legs, arms, and shoulders, a spot I always know IMG_20180917_120539gets too much sun. But I forgot to get my face, and I forgot to get my upper chest, and DAMN did I get a burn. I meant to sunscreen my face and chest, but one distraction later, and I forgot. That night, it hurt.

But after getting back from the game, I showered my sunscreen off, and added three essential oils with a carrier oil to my burnt parts, mostly my face, chest, and shoulders. My forehead and hairline was the worst by far but like I said, three applications and a good nights sleep and my skin was cured!

I should have taken a before and after because looking at my face yesterday made it hard to believe how red I really was. But if you need to save your skin from a burn (or if you peel,) use this blend and you will be good to go!

Sunburn Saver

  • 1 drop Lavender
  • 1 drop Frankincense
  • 1 drop Copaiba
  • ½ squirt of Sweet Almond Oil (or carrier oil of choice)

Mix this combination in the palm of your hand and apply to your face or any sunburned area.

I’m telling you, this blend will take your skin from tight, hot, and red to better in just a few applications. Be careful in the sun, but if you do get a burn, save your skin with these oils!

When I Have Psoriasis Flares, This is What I Do

I hate when my psoriasis flares, it’s the worst feeling. What does it feel like? My skin itches, it’s on fire, it turns red, and it’s all around uncomfortable.

So what do I do when it happens? Slather on steroid cream? Run to the dermatologist to bathtub-2485957_1920.jpgget shots? Nope. These are the last things I do, the things I do ONLY if I have to. Let me explain.

I am not one to take medication. If I’m sick, I’m downing homemade, garlic-filled soup, dousing on essential oils, and sipping on OJ along with endless amounts of water.

And when I get psoriasis flares, it’s much of the same. Well, not exactly the same, but as natural and non-medicine as I can. Here are the things I do when I get a flare and the things that make me feel better, sans medicine.

Ice

Sometimes, nothing feels better than ice. It cools your skin, slightly numbs it, and does a good job of taking away the itch. Of course, be careful to not over-chill or give yourself ice burn, as this will only further irritate your skin. But in this case, for psoriasis flares, cold is good.

Essential Oilsleaf-3070153_1920.jpg

If I’m “at home,” and not going out, geranium is key. The thing is, it doesn’t smell good. But you know what else? It stops the itch. My other favorite no itch oil is peppermint. Because of the mint in it, it instantly cools your skin and, you guessed it, stops the itch.

Essential Oil and Epsom Salt Bath

These baths are perfect for flares and really help me relax, too. I like to use lavender, tea tree, and geranium oils for the bath. Make sure to mix the oils in a cup (or more) of Epsom salt and then add them to your bath water. (Just so you know, this mixture doesn’t smell good, it isn’t meant to, but it will make your skin better and you will be glad that you sat in it.) Also, add apple cider vinegar to your bath. I KNOW, yuck, all around, but this isn’t a smell good bath, it’s a (skin) feel good bath. Oh, and make sure the water’s not too hot, this is very important!

These are the main things I do when I get a flare. I have steroid cream on hand if I ever need it, but I rarely use it. I prefer to eat gluten-free, make sure to drink all the water, use paraben-free, fragrance-free, high-quality and natural lotion, and do anything and everything I can to naturally protect and take care of my skin.

I hope you don’t have psoriasis, but if you do, I hope this blog post is helpful and inspiring. Take care!

We’re Going On An Adventure

Otherwise known as our life. And we leave in less than two weeks! (Actually move from our apartment in South Florida to become gypsies, digital nomads, or like I like to call it, Airbnb’ers!)

I can hardly believe it. What once was a thought of, talked through, pipe dream is fast becoming our reality, and I cannot wait to tell you about it.

First things first, a little about my story. My hubby and I are anything but traditional. We moved and lived to Panama for 6 months early in our dating life. We came back and got married on the sly. And then, once we were back (home,) Nick found himself his dream job and we left and moved to Florida.

And today, we are coming up on almost three (HOT) years in Florida. It’s really crazy how fast it went. Wow.

And now, we’re on to the next!

sunrise-182302_1920
Wisconsin

We plan to spend most of August and September back home (in Wisconsin,) almost all of October traveling, November back here in the Florida life and by Christmas we will be to my mom and step dad’s in Arizona. Whew!

From there, we plan to spend most of  2019 on the west coast. We have lots of love for California, Washington and Oregon, and are excited to visit new states and areas, too!

The end of this year will go fast and there are so many things I am looking forward to. A Brewer’s game back home, seeing friends and family, walking on the lake path in Lake Geneva and my favorite egg rolls ever are just the beginning.

Maybe I should back up and preface all of this with, both my husband and I have the ability to work remotely. Travel and seeing the nation (and the world!) is on both of our hearts and with the remote work option, neither of us can say exactly where we want to live “forever” or where we want to be even for now. We want to see, and be, in it all!

We talked about this life, this dream, this possibility..all the way back when we lived in Panama. Truly, that feels like a long time ago. It’s crazy how much time has passed, how many things have changed, and all that has happened to us in the last five years.

And now, we both are in completely new professions that hold our passions and allow us to live out our other passions, too, like spending time with our people and traveling. old-1130743_1920

Life has not always been easy and sometimes, it still isn’t. But things happen and you have to be flexible, and be as positive and patient as you can!

I am so excited. It’s hard to believe. But for now, I must go. I need to pack my life, my place, and my suitcase! (We’re off to Vancouver Canada at the end of this week for 10 days,) and we move three days after coming back. Oy! Oh yes, and don’t forget about that work life, too!

Thanks for reading and do me a favor and put in a prayer for us! Life may not have turned out like we “wanted it to,” or even how we thought it would. But that doesn’t mean it hasn’t turned our exactly how it was supposed to.

I can’t wait to share this journey with you and all of my continued love for natural everything, delicious food, God, workouts, friends and family, travel and everything else Emmy!

XOXO
